🚀 About NLnet Labs

Founded in 1999, NLnet Labs is a not-for-profit foundation with a long heritage in research and development, Internet architecture and governance, as well as stability and security in the area of DNS and inter-domain routing. We develop open source software with a liberal license and are completely dependent on industry funding to make this happen.

We are responsible for three widely used and well respected DNS implementations:

  • NSD, an authoritative name server
  • Unbound, a validating, recursive resolver
  • OpenDNSSEC, a policy based DNSSEC signer

We also maintain several DNS libraries, such as LDNS and GetDNS, as well as the domain crate for Rust.

In the area of inter-domain routing, we offer a full featured RPKI toolset to help prevent BGP hijacking:

  • Krill, an RPKI Certificate Authority and Publication Server
  • Routinator, an RPKI Relying Party software package
  • RTRTR, an RPKI data proxy and toolkit

💖 Will you sponsor us?

We currently have ten software developers, two researchers and two managers on staff. In addition to developing software, we actively promote open source and open standards. We contribute to the Internet Engineering Task Force, with several published RFCs carrying our name. We also play an active role in Internet governance, offering independent advice to governments and regulatory bodies to sustain a safe and stable DNS and inter-domain routing infrastructure.

Your contributions help our foundation maintain a sustainable place for research, as well as development of software and open standards. Your support will help us in several areas:

  • Financial support of the core development team members
  • Ongoing engineering expenses, such as test platforms and hosting services
  • Communication, documentation and industry presence

Please join our community so we can continue doing awesome things!
