ConvergenceLA is a public art installation by Susan Narduli and Refik Anadol for Greenland USA, the Los Angeles-based development arm of the Chinese developer Greenland Holdings Corp. It was shown at their Metropolis property in Downtown Los Angeles. ConvergenceLA uses a 100-foot-wide LED screen to visualize historic and real-time data «to digitally depict the diversity, culture and creative energing teeming in Los Angeles».

Together with onformative we realized – a companion-website made with WebGL to further interact with the data. The abstract map of LA visualises tectonic and weather data, metro lines, local tweets as well as news headlines.
The visualization consists of three modes, which fluidly blend into each other by zooming with the mouse. The first shows a broader view on Los Angeles visualizing natural data (tectonics and wind). The second layer is a close-up of the city showing the movement in the city (metro) as well as cultural data (twitter, news headlines). The third layer, visible when completely zoomed in, is an abstract visualization of all the data combined.
