In Basis Universal’s v1.16 release, it focuses on smaller code size, less 3rd party dependencies (just Zstd), OpenCL support, faster ETC1S encoding, and fully multithreading/parallel processing.
- ETC1S encoding is now approximately 30% faster. We added more optimizations to the encoder’s backend and more SSE optimizations to the frontend.
- Optional OpenCL support has been added to the ETC1S encoder.
The Godot XR contributors released the latest version of the Godot OpenXR plugin. The release contains updates that provides Godot XR developers access to the latest XR APIs and features.
Martin Enthed, Innovation Manager at IKEA, joins hosts Patrick Cozzi (Cesium) and Marc Petit (Epic Games) on Building the Open Metaverse podcast to discuss his pioneering work in computer graphics, spatial computing, and 3D development at IKEA, and his advocacy for open standards as Vice President of The Khronos Group.
Additional Resources - Vulkan 1.3 Specification Release
In support of the Vulkan 1.3 specification launch, here are some additional resources:
The Khronos Group released the Vulkan 1.3 specification today, incorporating and mandating proven, developer-requested extensions, as well as a public roadmap and profiles to strengthen the Vulkan Ecosystem and provide visibility into Vulkan’s future requirements for key markets.
New extensions include dynamic rendering, an additional dynamic state, an improved synchronization API, and a range of other features. The Vulkan public roadmap aims to consolidate the support for selected extensions to provide a common functionality baseline in key markets to reduce feature fragmentation. The new Vulkan profile mechanism enables the precise specification and management of sets of API capabilities to streamline development and deployment or portable applications.

The Khronos Group and the European Machine Vision Association (EMVA) announce the formation of a new Camera Working Group to develop an open, royalty-free API standard for controlling camera system runtimes in embedded, mobile, industrial, XR, automotive, and scientific markets. Over 70 companies participated in an EMVA/Khronos-hosted Exploratory Group during 2021 to develop a Scope of Work document that will guide the direction of the API design. Design work is expected to start in February 2022, and any organization is invited to join Khronos to participate.
